How to Synthesize Lactones - Part 1

Iodolactonization that generates a lactone (a cyclic ester) ring by the addition of an oxygen and iodine across a C=C double bond is an intramolecular variant of the halohydrin synthesis.


The use of mild conditions and incorporation of the versatile iodine atom into the product are major benefits of this organic reaction.
