How to Find out the Percentage of Nitrogen in an Organic Compound – Part 2

The  Kjeldahl method  (or  digestion ) is a quantitative analytical method for a sample's organic nitrogen plus ammonia/ammonium ( NH 3 /NH 4 + ). Other forms of inorganic nitrogen, for instance, nitrate, are not included in this measurement without modification. It has been an important method for indirectly quantifying protein content of a sample using an empirical relation between Kjeldahl nitrogen and protein; however, adulteration by substances,  viz ., Melamine fails this method for the quantification of proteins.  An advanced method, say, mass spectrometry may be used for a precise and accurate measurement of a protein. Question: A sample of 0.50 g of an organic compound was treated according to Kjeldahl method. The ammonia evolved was absorbed in 50 mL of 0.50 M H 2 SO 4 . pH  is a logarithmic scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of aqueous solutions. Henry's law , a gas law, states that the amount of dissolved gas in a liquid is directly proportional at equilibrium to its partial pressure above the liquid. The depth-dependent dissolution of Oxygen and Nitrogen in the blood of underwater divers which changes during decompression, possibly causing decompression sickness if the decompression occurs too fast, is an application of Henry’s law. Once the bottle of a carbonated soft drink is opened, almost pure Carbon dioxide above the liquid in the container at a pressure higher than the atmospheric pressure escapes decreasing the pressure above the liquid, resulting in fast degassing as the dissolved gas is liberated from the solution. Solubility equilibrium is a type of dynamic equilibrium that exists when a solid chemical compound is in chemical equilibrium with a solution of that compound. The solid may dissolve unchanged, with dissociation, or with chemical reaction with another component of the solution, viz. , acid, base or salt. Each solubility equilibrium is characterized by a temperature-dependent solubility product which functions like an equilibrium constant. Question: K sp (Ag 2 C 2 O 4 ) = 1.29 x 10 -11 mol 3 /L 3 at 25 0 C . How to Determine whether a Process Is Thermodynamically Favored

The term ‘spontaneous’ has historically been used to describe processes for which the change in Gibbs free energy in the standard state, ΔG Ѳ < 0 . The phrase ‘thermodynamically favored’ is preferred instead so that common misunderstandings equating ’spontaneous’ with ‘suddenly’ or ‘without cause’ can be avoided. Knowing the values of ΔH Ѳ & ΔS Ѳ (change in enthalpy and entropy in the standard state respectively) for a process at a given temperature T (absolute value) allows ΔG Ѳ to be calculated directly: ΔG Ѳ = ΔH Ѳ ─ TΔS Ѳ If ΔH Ѳ < 0 & ΔS Ѳ > 0, no calculation of ΔG Ѳ is necessary to determine that the process is thermodynamically favored ( ΔG Ѳ < 0 ). If ΔH Ѳ > 0 & ΔS Ѳ < 0, no calculation of ΔG Ѳ is required either to conclude that the process is thermodynamically unfavored ( ΔG Ѳ > 0 ). Centrifugation is a mechanical process which uses the centrifugal force to separate particles from a solution as per their size, shape, density, medium viscosity and rotor speed.
