How to Understand the Significance of Chirality in Reality – Part 1
A molecule/ion is called chiral if it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image by any combination of rotations, translations, and some conformational changes, and the corresponding geometric property is called chirality.
The stereochemistry of the molecule of a food or a drug may have a profound influence on its effectiveness. One stereoisomer may have a therapeutic effect, but the other may not. Moreover, one of the isomers may have an adverse effect or be toxic! A food additive may or may not offer its intended use like flavor/odor depending on the 3D chemistry of the molecule.
